Between Earth and Sky – Installation

The room itself is mostly empty. The elements of the installation are situated on the floor and ceiling but conceptually, it is about the space in-between. The space occupied by the viewer.

The floor is covered with a layer of dirt. People must walk on the dirt (the earth) in order to enter the space of the installation. Overhead, swirling flocks of crows are projected directly onto the architecture of the ceiling with multiple HD video projectors.

Our attention, like our real life aspirations, is drawn upward toward the birds. Meanwhile, in the dirt below our feet, perhaps completely un-noticed, real, live ants are industriously scurrying about. The ants are in peril of being crushed by anyone who enters the space of the installation. This is really no different than anytime we walk around outside. It serves to remind us how our actions affect the environment we live in, both as individuals and as a species.

The birds in flight projected onto the ceiling, act as a metaphor for freedom and yet, in this installation they remain trapped within the constraints of the building. The inference is that all life is imprisoned within the bounds of existence and the persistence of time.

The viewer stands momentarily in limbo between earth and sky, life and death.
