Art Gallery of Calgary installation, 2010
ARTIST STATEMENT A year-long time-lapse documents the seasonal changes and the leisure activities of visitors to a public park. The time-lapse then appears to repeat but in fact everything continues to change. Observation and memory are engaged to explore both the linear and the cyclical aspects time. It is only through memory that we are able to perceive the existence of time. A montage of news, weather and sports audio clips collected from the same year, creates a larger socio-political sphere for the picturesque park and its visitors. One does not exist in isolation of the other. Together they reveal some fundamental and timeless truths about how we as a species relate to each other and to the world around us. AWARDS NORDART 2011 PUBLIC CHOICE AWARD - NordArt is the largest annual curated exhibition of contemporary art in northern Europe. The exhibition included artworks by 250 artists from 55 countries and had an attendance of over 46,000 visitors. SPECIAL MENTION - The jury of Asolo International Art Film Festival's 29th edition has assigned a special mention to the film “News, Weather & Sports” with the following motivation: Through the seasons the transience of human passage and apparent permanence of the natural setting lead us to reflect on the different temporal dimensions of existence. We award this film for the strong and evocative expression, synthesis capable of the inexorable passage of time.
